Chapter 2
Underground Railroad

"Hey silence," Eco said. "How are we going to get through the city?"

"That's a simple question," he said as he was walking. "Have you ever heard the story of the Underground Railroad?"

"Well, only fragments, but, didn't that happen over 1,000 years ago?" she inquired.

"Yes, that's how we get in." Silence began to run. He had unnatural speed.

Eco followed close behind just as fast. "Why are we running?"

"There's a trader car coming behind us. We can't reveal ourselves or the path to the secret railroad."

"What, how could you tell?" she asked with disbelief.

"Look behind you," he said calmly.

She looked over her shoulder to see a caravan coming in fast. "Why are they going so fast?!" Then suddenly a giant plum of fire engulfed the cart.

"Bet you anything it's a monster, more the reason to run faster!!" He picked up tremendous speed. Eco could barely keep up. He suddenly took a hairpin turn into some bushes and continued running down a slightly beaten pathway. He then slowed down and looked behind him. Eco was just coming down the path. "You okay?"

She gasped several times before answering. "Am I gasp okay!! gasp How can you run so fast!! It was unbelievable, even for a blood mutant!!" She was still trying to catch air when the burning caravan rolled by, then after it, a chimera. "Holy gasp!!" she swore.

"Oh that can't be good," Silence said with a high tone. "Those villagers are going to have some trouble! And afterward, probably a few blood mutants as well." He smiled. "Hope that sniper gets blooded. That'll teach him." He turned and continued to walk.

"Hay, wait, where are you going?" called Eco.

"To the Railroad, remember? Our ticket into the city, come one!"

They walked farther down the path until a clearing was in view. In this clearing was a simple house. Silence walked up to the door and knocked twice. The door soon opened and a man with a primitive rifle stepped out. He was tall, muscular, and had a hard face. Eco was terrified, but Silence, not so much. He stared at the man and said, "Marcus, long time no see!"

The man's face softened a little and he set the gun aside. "AH, Silence!" he said with a booming voice. He put his large hand on Silence's head and began to ruffle his long silver hair. "Still small as ever!"

"Yah, well, no one can get as big as you can they?" Silence asked. Eco couldn't believe it. How could Silence be talking to a human, she thought.

They continued to talk until Eco interrupted. "Wait just a second!" she yelled her tail stretched out fur standing up. "How could you be friends with this, this human, it's not right?!"

Silence and Marcus looked at each other. "Well why shouldn't we? We have been forever, even before I was blooded."

Marcus looked at Eco. "Brought a 'hater of humans,' ay Silence?" he snickered.

"Looks that way Marcus, come inside Eco, it's fine!" Silence began to walk in the house.

"What, you trust him?!" she asked, still firmly planted on ground.

"Well duh, didn't we just get through this?" he said as he walked in the house.

"Well I don't trust him," she finally came inside to get a grand surprise. Blood mutants of all kinds were everywhere, even other kitsunes. "Wow, amazing!" she said. Silence smiled at her reaction. Then he went down a spiral staircase into large underground room. This room was like a large bedroom. It had beds along the long walls of the room, a kitchen, restrooms, and even more blooded.

They walked through another door into another large room that had four tan cloth caravans in it, and a large tunnel leading to the surface. "So is everything ready for me?" Silence asked Marcus.

"Yes, your caravan is ready and all riders report in. They are ready to go when you are." Marcus pointed to a caravan with five blood mutants already inside. Two horses were also strapped to the caravan.

"Perfect," Silence said. "Oh, and I'm also taking her." Silence pointed to Eco who was now bothering the other mutants.

"I see no problem with that, just be careful around the swamp this time," Marcus cautioned. "I hear that some nagas are living down there now."

"Alright, but even if we do see some nagas, I will deal with them." He grabbed his katana and unsheathed it.

Marcus sighed. "I can't believe it."

"What's that?" Silence asked.

"The first caravan; the start of the Underground Railroad, it's so amazing that we haven't been discovered."

"Yeah, let's hope it stays hidden." Silence turned around to see Eco looking around, bothering the other mutants. "Eco, we're going!"

"Okay, coming!" She ran toward the caravan and stopped in front of Marcus. "I think, I trust you and, what you're doing here is a very noble of you."

Marcus smiled. "Thank you, but what's your name young kitsune?" Marcus asked.

She smiled back, flicked her tail and said. "My name is Eco; I was born as a kitsune and shall die as a kitsune!" Marcus smiled and chuckled a little. Eco then jumped into the caravan and they where off.

"Good luck," he said as the caravan road off.

"Thanks Marcus, see yah soon!" Silence said as he lost view of Marcus in the long tunnel.
