Chapter 7
The First Caravan
At four o'clock in the morning, the four blood mutants were off to Haven. They rode their horses out of the village wall's small opening. Then they rode as fast as the wind as they made their way to Haven. They rode all day long, never resting, never eating. They rode through the scorching afternoon, and Mewt had to take off his heavy coat and his long sleeved shirt. Silence looked and saw that Mewt's entire torso, minus his neck, was covered with gray fur.
After he took his coat off, he threw it into the breeze, never to see it again. He stuffed his long sleeved shirt into an empty saddle bag and whipped his reins to make the horse go faster. Silence laughed and whipped his reins as well.
The sun was just setting by the time they reached a long, clear, blue river. They stopped, knowing they were safe too, and rested. They tied their horses to some nearby trees. Eco jumped into an apple tree and started to devour one. Robert lay in the shade of a tree. Mewt was drinking from the river, taking water up with his hands in quick successions. And Silence, being Silence, jumped into the river, splashing Mewt. "Sorry Mewt!" Silence apologized as he swam down river. Mewt simply got up and started to set up camp, forgetting the event completely.
Silence continued to float down river, eyes closed, oblivious to everything around him; everything except for a strange smell. He opened his eyes and sniffed the air. "Copper?" he thought out loud. "Blood!" he exclaimed. He turned onto his belly and swam until the smell was the strongest.
Now the smell was sickening. He also saw a light just behind some trees. He came ashore and walked toward the smell. He was sure the smell was coming from the light, and now a new smell entered his nostrils. He was unfamiliar with it. His extra sensitive nose leads him straight to the smell. What he found was even more sickening then the smell. He looked down to see the burned bodies of six people. He winced as he looked at the bodies closer. They were blood mutants! "The caravan!" He dropped to his knees and stared at the charred remains of the caravan and of the people that were in it.
He closed his eyes and clenched his fist and then slammed it on the blackened ground. Tears fell from his eyes. "They didn't deserve this!" he screamed and beet the ground even harder. "Why?!" he asked again.
The moon now illuminated the earth. Silence dug six graves out with a shovel he found in the remains of the caravan. Crosses marked them. Silence stood eyes closed facing the moon. The light reflected off his silver fur.
"Silence?" A voice called. "Silence are you all right?" Silence turned to see Eco and the others. He held three arrows in his hands. He then walked towards them. Eco and Robert now saw the graves. Mewt saw as well but still had his regular emotionless face on.
Silence walked between them and Mewt said, "They were killed by Hunters, you can tell by the arrows."
Silence stopped, not turning to face him, and replied, "I know." He then walked back to the camp still clenching the arrows.
Silence sat by the fire and ate the food Robert had cooked. Eco was already finished of course and Mewt had already gone to bed a tent he had set up. "Mewt's so unsociable! I mean he could have at least eaten with us, don't you think Silence?"
Silence didn't answer. He stood up and put his plate in the pile Eco and Robert had made with their dishes. He then walked to his tent. He was soon asleep.
